CONSOL Energy - Customer Case Study

CONSOL Energy, a leading producer of bituminous coal and natural gas in the Eastern United States, wanted to reduce methane vented into the atmosphere at its Fallowfield Gas Processing Plant in Pennsylvania. To address this challenge, CONSOL worked with Capstone Green Energy and its distributor E-Finity Distributed Generation to evaluate a way to capture waste coal bed methane and turn it into usable onsite power using a Capstone CR200 microturbine.

Capstone Green Energy installed a methane-fueled CR200 microturbine, along with gas-conditioning equipment and controls, to convert the plant’s waste gas stream into electricity. The system recovers up to 18.5 million cubic feet of methane, generates 1.331 million net kWh of clean power, and is expected to save about US$80,000 annually in energy costs while cutting emissions equivalent to 6,486 metric tonnes of CO2, or about 1,400 cars off the road.
