AGL Energy - Wallumbilla LPG Facility

AGL Energy, one of Australia’s largest energy companies, needed to replace three aging natural gas-fired reciprocating engines at its Wallumbilla LPG facility in Queensland. The challenge was to find a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective power solution that could improve reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and support secure operations for the site. Capstone Green Energy provided a grid-connected microturbine solution using a Capstone C1000S.

Capstone Green Energy implemented a butane-fired C1000S microturbine system at the Wallumbilla facility, the first of its kind in the world and the first grid-connected butane microturbine in Queensland. The system now meets the site’s electricity needs while exporting about 800 kW to the grid, generating roughly $800,000 AUD in annual savings from power export alone, plus additional savings from lower maintenance and byproduct fuel use. The project also improved efficiency, reliability, and significantly reduced noise pollution.
