Shagowaskee Protects Biodiversity With an Eye in the Sky

ShagowAskee Foundation, a group of Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and trappers in Northern Alberta, Canada, needed a better way to prove the impact of logging, wildfires, and climate change on local habitats and the endangered wood buffalo herd. To build a stronger case for policy and land-management changes, it worked with Capgemini through Sogeti and used Geo Satellite Intelligence and AI to turn satellite and environmental data into clear evidence.

Capgemini implemented a GIS and Geo Satellite Intelligence solution that combined satellite imagery, open datasets, AWS S3, and AI models to analyze habitat change over time. The result was a repeatable visual and data-driven view of cumulative land impacts since the 1980s, helping ShagowAskee Foundation show what was logged, where, and how ecosystems and species were affected, strengthening its ability to influence leaders and communities.
