A Capgemini Case Study
Petoro, a company managing Norway's state-owned oil and gas assets, faced the challenge of declining production and high operating costs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Their strategic goal was to implement "Smart Operations" (known locally as Integrated Operations or IO) to improve efficiency through IT and best practices. To assess the readiness of operators and drive this transformative shift, they partnered with the consulting firm Capgemini.
Capgemini conducted a comprehensive series of surveys and benchmarking studies from 2004 to 2007 to gauge operator readiness and identify leading practices for Smart Operations. The solution focused on integrating real-time data, technology, and redesigned work processes across drilling, reservoir management, and operations. The results were transformative, with an estimated NOK 15 billion in value creation attributed to IO in 2006. The initiative established the NCS as a world leader in networked operations, leading to significant gains in cost reduction, work efficiency, and production volumes.
