Office for Criminal Justice Reform - Customer Case Study

The Office for Criminal Justice Reform (OCJR), a cross-departmental government body, needed a technology solution to support its ambitious Virtual Courts program. The challenge was to align multiple agencies with differing objectives and governance under a restricted budget and aggressive timeline, all to improve the efficiency of the criminal justice system. They partnered with the vendor Capgemini to develop and deploy a prototype solution.

Capgemini designed and implemented a secure virtual courts system utilizing video conferencing and document sharing to connect police stations and magistrates courts. This solution dramatically reduced the time from a defendant being charged to their first hearing from days to just hours. The successful pilot, managed by Capgemini, demonstrated significant potential for efficiency savings and was met with interest from other police forces, paving the way for a wider rollout.
