Making the invisible visible with WindSight IQ™

The 37th America’s Cup wanted to make yacht racing easier for spectators to understand and more engaging to watch, but the key factor driving performance — wind — was invisible to viewers and commentators. To solve this challenge, the event partnered with Capgemini and its WindSight IQ™ concept to explore a new way to visualize race conditions and explain strategy in real time.

Capgemini implemented a LiDAR-based sensor system that measured wind speed and direction across the Barcelona racecourse, combining data from shore-based sensors, buoys, and yachts into a live wind field visualization. The result was a first-of-its-kind viewing experience that helped commentators explain tactics, gave fans deeper insight into the race, and contributed to record viewing numbers during the tournament.
