Hydro One Networks Inc. - Customer Case Study

Hydro One Networks Inc., a major electricity distributor in Ontario, faced the immense challenge of meeting provincial energy conservation goals by deploying over 1.3 million smart meters. This initiative was part of a larger effort to manage a projected supply-demand gap through advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and time-of-use pricing. The utility partnered with vendor Capgemini for project management support, systems integration, and operational services to achieve this aggressive rollout across its vast and often rugged service territory.

Capgemini implemented the solution by providing comprehensive project management, overseeing logistics for meter installation, and integrating new time-of-use billing systems with Hydro One's customer care operations. This collaboration enabled the successful deployment of over 100,000 smart meters by mid-2007, putting the project on target to meet its goals. As a result of this progress, Hydro One was recognized with a 2007 award for Advanced Meter Reading deployment, and the project established a foundation for achieving more than a 5% reduction in provincial electricity demand.
