A Capgemini Case Study
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) faced the urgent challenge of rapidly delivering financial support to millions of UK self-employed individuals whose income was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The UK government tasked HMRC with creating a secure digital service to distribute grants, a process that needed to be completed in a matter of weeks rather than the many months it would normally take.
Collaborating with HMRC and other partners, Capgemini helped architect and deliver the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) using a hybrid cloud platform. The agile, customer-centric solution processed extreme volumes of over 1,000 transactions per second at launch. Capgemini's work was instrumental in the service successfully paying £6.5 billion in its first week and ultimately processing over 8.8 million claims worth £24.5 billion, providing crucial support to 2.8 million individuals.
