HMRC rapidly develops digital service to support employers

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) faced the urgent challenge of preventing mass job losses at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The UK government tasked them with creating a digital service to administer the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, a process that would typically take a year, within an extremely accelerated timeframe of just four weeks. HMRC partnered with Capgemini to rapidly develop this critical solution.

Working as a single, collaborative team with HMRC, Capgemini developed and delivered a robust digital service using a microservice architecture and agile methodology. The solution was launched in just four weeks and processed over £1.5 billion in claims on its first day. Ultimately, the system supported 1.2 million employers and protected 9.9 million jobs, paying out over £46.4 billion in grants. Capgemini helped HMRC deliver a vital service that provided immense support to the UK economy during an unprecedented crisis.
