Hmrc Becomes The First Tax Authority In The World To Launch Open Banking Payments

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the UK's tax authority, sought to improve the security, certainty, and cost-efficiency of tax payments made by individuals and businesses. To address this challenge, they partnered with vendor Capgemini to explore an Open Banking payment initiation system.

Capgemini worked with HMRC to design, test, and implement a "Pay by bank account" service, the world's first public sector Open Banking system for tax payments. This solution eliminated costly card charges and reduced payment errors. The results were significant, with over one million payments worth £3 billion processed in the first ten months, leading to substantial cost savings and greater efficiency for HMRC.
