A Capgemini Case Study
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) faced the challenge of modernizing its large and complex merged IT estate without the capital investment typically required for such a transformation. Their existing infrastructure was costly to maintain, leaving little budget for the change needed to create a smaller, cheaper, and more modern IT operation. They partnered with vendor Capgemini under the Aspire outsourcing contract to address this.
Capgemini devised an innovative solution called the Aurora programme, a transformation funded by recycling the savings from decommissioning old hardware and software. The vendor delivered 111 projects, removing thousands of servers and applications while introducing standardized, modern systems. The results exceeded the target, achieving over £161 million in annualized savings, reducing the carbon footprint by 4,000 tonnes, and providing new equipment like 25,000 PCs, all without any upfront capital investment from HMRC.
