HM Revenue & Customs - Customer Case Study

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) faced the challenge of migrating its business-critical systems, responsible for billions in annual payments, from aging data centres to a modern, resilient facility. The move, particularly for the highly interconnected Tax Credits service, was considered one of the most complex in the UK and had to be completed with absolutely no disruption to over six million families. To undertake this transformation, HMRC partnered with vendor Capgemini for IT and related services delivered through the Aspire contract.

Capgemini implemented a phased programme, designing new infrastructure and managing the secure transfer of over 20 terabytes of data. The solution involved meticulously reconfiguring hundreds of interfaces and conducting extensive rehearsals, which condensed the final implementation from two weeks to a single weekend. As a result, Capgemini successfully migrated the systems with zero public disruption, achieving over 99.9% availability, reducing HMRC's carbon footprint, and providing a proven blueprint for future data centre migrations.
