HM Revenue & Customs - Customer Case Study

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) sought to reduce energy consumption and meet strict carbon reduction targets, identifying its large PC estate as a key area for improvement. The department worked with its prime IT partner, Capgemini, to find a solution that would save energy without disrupting the necessary overnight software updates.

Capgemini designed and implemented a bespoke 'Wake on LAN' solution. This system automatically placed PCs into a low-power state when idle and woke them for updates, avoiding the need for expensive new software licenses. This project by Capgemini reduced overnight PC energy usage by up to 90%, cutting electricity costs by nearly £1 million and reducing carbon emissions by almost 6,000 tonnes, while also paying for itself.
