HM Revenue & Customs - Customer Case Study

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), the UK tax agency, faced the challenge of identifying fraud and errors hidden within vast amounts of data. Their existing largely manual processes were inefficient, taking skilled staff too much time to correct errors instead of pursuing aggressive evasion. To tackle this, HMRC partnered with vendor Capgemini to develop a strategic risking tool, later named Connect, to leverage business intelligence technology and data analytics.

Capgemini implemented the Connect solution, which cross-matched a billion internal and third-party data items to uncover hidden relationships and anomalies. The system automated risk profiling and case allocation, enabling HMRC to focus its resources effectively. As a result, Connect has generated over £2.6 billion in additional yield to date and led to streamlined operations delivered by 40% fewer staff. Capgemini's solution transformed HMRC's compliance efforts, allowing it to become a leader in using bulk data analytics to combat tax evasion.
