Harnessing the power of AI to combat River Blindness

University Hospital Bonn was facing a major challenge in advancing treatment for River Blindness, a neglected tropical disease affecting more than 20 million people. Together with Capgemini and AWS, the university needed a faster way to analyze tissue samples and support the development of new therapies, since manual review was slow and required scarce expert time.

Capgemini implemented its Global Data Science Challenge, creating an online environment where teams used AWS to build AI models that scan tissue sample images and detect parasitic worms. The initiative selected a winning solution with the best improvement in review accuracy, helping speed up diagnosis and research; Capgemini and the University Hospital Bonn now plan to continue developing the solution further.
