A Capgemini Case Study
BC Hydro, Canada's third-largest electricity utility, faced the challenge of modernizing its aging grid infrastructure, much of which was over 50 years old, to improve reliability and customer service. To address this, they partnered with vendor Capgemini to implement a Smart Metering Program using Capgemini's Smart Energy Services for system integration and program management.
The solution from Capgemini involved replacing over 1.8 million conventional meters with smart meters. This implementation delivered significant results, including over $1.6 billion CAD in overall benefits and at least $500 million in net benefits to help reduce rate pressures for customers. The smart meters also enable faster outage response, provide customers with new tools to manage energy use, and support the integration of renewable energy sources onto the grid.
