A Capgemini Case Study
Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), within the UK Ministry of Defence, was looking for new ways to improve efficiency, cut costs, and maximize the value of its assets amid intense scrutiny of defence spending. Capgemini was brought in to explore how Robotic Process Automation (RPA) could streamline DE&S’s complex inventory and administrative processes, which had traditionally relied on large teams doing repetitive manual work.
Capgemini implemented LAURA, a logistics automation solution that used robots operating within defined business rules to handle simple administrative tasks and route exceptions to humans. The solution delivered 28 hours of saved processing time in just three days and nearly 500 hours within 30 days, while also improving operational metrics and decision-making. The project is generating annual savings of more than £500,000 and creating a strong case for expanding automation across DE&S and the wider MOD.
