A Capgemini Case Study
Akershus University Hospital, a large Norwegian healthcare provider, faced the challenge of optimizing its use of CT examinations in emergencies. The hospital needed to ensure the benefits of these scans, which can be life-saving but also carry radiation risks, consistently outweighed the potential harms. To analyze vast amounts of unstructured data from patient journals, the hospital partnered with vendor Capgemini, which utilized IBM Watson Explorer technology.
Capgemini implemented a solution using IBM Watson Explorer, which was trained to understand Norwegian and medical terminology. This allowed for the automated analysis of over 5,000 radiology reports to identify scan frequency and findings. The project confirmed the hospital's CT scanning of children was justified, providing vital data for quality assurance and optimizing procedures. As a result, Akershus University Hospital improved its analytical capabilities and is better positioned to deliver patient care in critical circumstances.
