A Capgemini Case Study
Hospital Ramón y Cajal, along with Hospital 12 de Octubre and Hospital San Pablo, faced significant strain on their staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. The challenge was the immense time and medical expertise required to diagnose symptomatic patients using chest X-rays. To address this, the hospitals formed a consortium to explore AI solutions, partnering with vendor Capgemini and other technology firms.
Capgemini, as part of the consortium, co-developed a proof-of-concept AI-based federated learning platform for screening X-rays. This solution maintained high-level patient data privacy by ensuring information never left the individual hospitals. The resulting aggregate diagnostic model achieved a 24% increase in performance over local models, providing crucial support to hospitals with less expertise in radiology.
