Case Study: Utah State University achieves rapid, large-scale LMS migration and Banner integration with Canvas LMS

University sets the standard for implementing Canvas, integrating with existing systems

Utah State University, a lead member of the Utah Education Network, was one of the first large institutions to replace Blackboard with Canvas in 2011. Facing complex, large-scale courses and the need for real-time integration with its Banner student information system—using Luminis Message Broker—USU had one semester to test and deploy a solution that would serve as a model for other schools.

Working with Instructure, USU implemented live Banner integration, ran Blackboard Vista and Canvas on the same LMB, and integrated key third-party tools. In 10 months the university migrated over 3,000 courses, resulting in more than 3.4 million uploaded files, ~6,000 new media files, ~1,500 instructors and 32,000 students using Canvas, and consistent weekly page views above one million—with improved uptime, stability and overwhelmingly positive faculty and student feedback.
