Knox County Schools - Customer Case Study

Knox County Schools, a K–12 district serving over 57,000 students in 89 Tennessee schools, launched a district-funded School Technology Challenge after a Race to the Top grant was not awarded. Eleven schools were selected for an initial 1:1 personalized learning rollout and district leaders identified a learning management system as the critical “glue” to coordinate devices, instruction, and support.

KCS chose Canvas in 2013 for its ease-of-use, LTI integrations, and K–12 fit, quickly provisioning accounts and providing onsite trainer-led professional development. The platform was used districtwide for students in grades 4–12 and 650 teachers in year one (expanding to 5,000+ staff in 2014); teachers reported higher student engagement and participation and praised features like SpeedGrader and assessment tools, making Canvas indispensable to the district’s 1:1 initiative.
