Innovative Approach With Canvas Provides Progress for All

The Mississippi Community College Board oversees 15 community and junior colleges across the state and operates the Mississippi Virtual Community College (MSVCC) host/provider model to share courses, faculty, and services. Facing inconsistent learning experiences, duplicate systems, and rising costs from using two different LMSs and disparate digital tools, administrators worried students were wasting time learning platforms instead of content and that the prior systems lacked the features needed for a robust online experience.

In 2013 the system selected Canvas through an RFP, migrated all colleges in under a semester, and trained more than 100,000 users. Canvas’ cloud-based platform and single sign-on simplified administration, reduced IT maintenance, enabled students to take courses from any college, and improved mobile access and instructional consistency—freeing staff to focus on pedagogy, partnerships, and ongoing innovation.
