Change to Canvas LMS Enables Major Migration and Sparks Innovation

Eastern Michigan University, a public university in Ypsilanti, faced a major LMS challenge: after a decade of use the old system was full of thousands of courses, difficult to update, and at risk of holding the institution back from newer educational technologies. Administrators were especially concerned about migrating that content without disrupting instruction.

In 2015 EMU adopted Canvas, worked with Canvas teams to migrate more than 5,000 courses, and ramped up training through its Center for E‑Learning while leveraging 24/7 support. Developers built the CanvasDataViewer to automate daily data analysis, and the result was a smooth rollout that freed faculty to focus on pedagogy, spurred campus innovation, and improved teaching and learning outcomes.
