Change Brings New Opportunities for Innovation

San Juan College, a two-year community college in Farmington, New Mexico, needed a modern learning management system that would support its specialized career programs, comply with Quality Matters standards, and offer better support and integrations than its aging ANGEL system. With continuity for students transferring within New Mexico and a priority on ease of use, service, and reporting, the college formed a faculty‑staff‑student selection team to evaluate alternatives.

After a 2013 pilot, San Juan chose Canvas and rolled it out college‑wide in 2014. Canvas’ training, AWS hosting, SpeedGrader and app integrations freed staff from server management, accelerated course development, and enabled a college‑wide template and accessibility standards. Adoption reached 95%, a Minimum Standard Use policy was implemented, and the platform helped faculty meet Quality Matters benchmarks and expand online program offerings.
