Zymergen, a US-based molecular technology company that engineers microbes for new products and materials, faced a growing need to onboard new projects faster while keeping manufacturing processes efficient and customizable. To integrate with its automation and digital systems and give non-programmer scientists a flexible way to model workflows, Zymergen selected Camunda and its Camunda BPM solution.

Using Camunda BPM (with Spring Boot integration and a library of Call Activities), Zymergen enabled scientists to build executable workflows, gave operators step-by-step task lists, and let the tech team orchestrate services and data-driven decisions. Camunda helped Zymergen increase the speed of process onboarding, reduce manufacturing workflow deviations, and cut time spent analyzing data — supporting nearly 400 process definitions and approaching 20,000 process instance executions per month.
