Zalando, Europe's largest online fashion platform, faced a major challenge with its complex "Take order" process for handling online orders. Camunda's solution involved modeling the entire process in BPMN for clarity and implementing a highly scalable technical architecture. This included a high availability runtime environment and a sharding strategy using multiple Camunda Process Engines to handle the vast order data. The result was a process where the documentation now perfectly matches technical reality, enabling continuous improvement. Critically, Camunda enabled the synchronous processing of all orders during checkout in under 300ms, seamlessly supporting over 16 million active customers.
