Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property - Customer Case Study

The Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) — the Swiss authority for trademarks, patents and designs — faced slow, costly and expert-dependent process execution driven by a proprietary BPM solution that hindered business–IT communication and made security compliance and frequent process changes hard to manage. To move to business-driven development, IPI adopted the Camunda BPM platform (including Camunda Cockpit) in 2014 to leverage BPMN 2.0 support and integrate with their existing Java EE stack without forcing a technology change.

Camunda implemented a lightweight, standards-based BPM engine that let IPI keep its Java EE environment, avoid an enterprise service bus through asynchronous processing, and monitor end-to-end operations via Camunda Cockpit. The project defined more than 100 processes, runs about 5,000 process instances per day with ~250 users, and delivered greater transparency, higher-quality and faster implementations, and more effective operations thanks to Camunda.
