A Camunda Case Study
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs faced a growing backlog in pension, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), and burial claims caused by manual processing, specialized knowledge bottlenecks, and surge events like new legislation and COVID‑19. To accelerate benefits delivery and reduce backlog, VA partnered with Booz Allen and selected Camunda—using Camunda Platform and Camunda Operate—as its process automation and orchestration vendor.
Camunda implemented a BPMN/DMN model‑driven solution integrated with the VA’s Benefits Integration Platform, enabling rapid prototyping, orchestration of legacy services, and automated decisioning. The first proof‑of‑concept deployed in under eight weeks and the initial release reached production in less than four months; over 25 subsequent releases drove a more than 65% increase in fully automated claims, reduced average claim processing time by over one third, and enabled some claims to be completed the same day, while improving visibility and time‑to‑value.
