Case Study: DB Cargo achieves efficient cross‑border capacity management for single‑wagonload freight with Camunda BPM

A Camunda Case Study

Preview of the DB Cargo Case Study

Introduction of a new capacity management system which forms the foundation for both national & international transport

DB Cargo, Europe’s most productive freight railway, faced the challenge of reliably orchestrating cross‑border single wagonload bookings across the Xrail alliance while avoiding distributed business logic and rising system complexity. To solve this, DB Cargo partnered with Camunda and embedded the Camunda Process Engine in a new Transport Chain and Service Management (TSM) system to provide a central orchestration layer, leveraging Camunda’s workflow and decision engine plus cloud deployment to integrate legacy systems and meet strict availability and response requirements.

Camunda implemented a lightweight, embedded BPMN platform (including Camunda Cockpit from the Camunda Enterprise Platform) within TSM, enabling agile development, continuous delivery and scalable cloud operation. The solution reduced integration complexity, made process execution visible for monitoring and optimization, supported DB Cargo’s ability to meet high‑availability (99.98%) and response-time objectives, and is now being validated in Xrail pilot phases — with Camunda’s support and community accelerating ongoing process improvements.
