Helsana, Switzerland’s largest healthcare insurer, faced slow, paper-based legacy processes and resistance to large, monolithic process engines that blocked online sales and self-service. To modernize without creating another heavyweight system, Helsana chose Camunda—using Camunda BPM (and Camunda Optimize for monitoring)—to prove a lightweight, non‑invasive approach for customer sign-off and backend integration.
Camunda implemented a rapid Proof of Concept, replacing legacy UI code with BPMN models and building the “Helsana Process Cockpit” on Camunda Optimize with email alerts for business owners. The POC was completed in 2½ days, the broader deployment marketed as a 48‑hour implementation, and within three months 15,000 applications were processed via the new self-service flow. Camunda also supported onsite training, helping Helsana upskill staff, form a BPMN community and generate a backlog of new automation projects.
