Deutsche Bahn cuts compensation reporting processing times with Camunda

Deutsche Bahn, one of the world's largest transport and logistics companies, faced a challenge in manually managing a document-heavy process for reporting on environmental compensation obligations to authorities. Their goal was to automate this cross-departmental and cross-company process to reduce processing times and ensure a uniform approach. DB Systel, Deutsche Bahn's ICT partner, led the project and selected Camunda as the BPM engine for its solution.

The solution involved using Camunda to execute business processes modeled in BPMN 2.0, combined with a Liferay portal and custom Java programming. Camunda enabled an agile implementation and easy transition from process diagrams to executable workflows. The resulting system, FINK, is now Deutsche Bahn's mandatory nationwide IT system for this purpose. It significantly reduced processing times, handled several thousand compensation cases during piloting, and established stable data exchange with authorities.
