A Camunda Case Study
DB Systel, the IT partner for Deutsche Bahn, faced the challenge of replacing a manual, document-heavy, cross-company process for reporting nature-conservation compensation (the FINK system) to shorten processing times and establish a uniform, group-wide approach. To make processes executable and easy for business users to understand, DB Systel selected Camunda and its Camunda BPM engine, working with partners to model processes in BPMN 2.0.
Using Camunda BPM (integrated with a Liferay portal and custom Java development by partner Ancud IT, with process modeling support from econauten), the team implemented executable BPMN models and an automated, XML-capable data exchange with authorities. Camunda supported the project through decisions and customization; the pilot processed several thousand compensations, proved stable and production-ready, and from 2016 FINK became the nationwide mandatory system for recording compensation obligations—delivering significantly shorter processing times and a standardized, scalable solution.
