Alameda Reduces a 4-Week Permit Backlog By Launching Camino (Alongside Accela)

a city government, the City of Alameda, faced a significant challenge in processing permit applications after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of City Hall. Their existing Accela system lacked an intuitive public-facing portal, leading to a four-week backlog as staff spent excessive time chasing applicants for missing information via phone and email. The city partnered with Camino Technologies to implement a solution.

Camino Technologies launched its online Permit Application Portal alongside the city's Accela system. This allowed residents to submit complete applications digitally and communicate with staff via a centralized chat feature. The implementation by Camino eliminated the backlog, saving over 3,600 staff hours and $180,000. The portal also served as a front counter for over 14,000 applicants, drastically reducing calls and emails and increasing customer satisfaction.
