Wacken Open Air - Customer Case Study

Wacken Open Air, the world’s largest heavy metal festival drawing over 80,000 visitors annually, needed a temporary, fast-to-deploy Wi‑Fi network because there is no permanent infrastructure on site and cellular networks become overloaded. Organizers required full-site coverage to support internal communications, VIP and press areas, payment systems and video surveillance. Working with partner Business IT Kiel, the festival selected Cambium Networks products for the temporary deployment.

Cambium Networks supplied a staged solution (46 devices in 2022 — 25 Wi‑Fi access points, 11 switches and 10 fixed wireless units — with similar deployments in 2023) and used the cnMaestro management platform for centralized administration. The Cambium deployment delivered stable, high‑bandwidth connectivity and fast roaming across the entire festival, enabled reliable internal communications for staff and services, and in 2023 connected the payment system plus six video surveillance cameras to the network.
