Port of Anacortes Introduces Wireless to Its Challenging Marine Environment

Port of Anacortes, a busy marine port with more than 950 boat slips, faced unreliable wireless connectivity in a harsh maritime environment where wind, salt, fog and precipitation disrupted networks that only supported security cameras. To deliver resilient, guest-grade Wi‑Fi and enable staff mobility, the port worked with EPI Networks to deploy Cambium Networks’ Xirrus Wi‑Fi solution using XR series access points.

EPI Networks installed XR-2420, XR-4420 and XR-4820 APs in outdoor enclosures, leveraging Cambium Networks’ multi‑radio, field‑upgradeable Xirrus architecture to provide high‑bandwidth coverage, reduce infrastructure costs, and withstand marine conditions. The deployment enabled streaming and mobile staff apps, cut IT complaints, unlocked new revenue opportunities (tiered Wi‑Fi plans and venue rentals), extended service to park and conference facilities, and produced an eight‑fold increase in wireless traffic as measured by the Xirrus Management System.
