National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Customer Case Study

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) needed a reliable, high-bandwidth link from its Aquarius undersea laboratory — 60 feet below sea level and nine miles offshore — to the land-based NURC facility in Key Largo. The existing wireless link only provided 2–4 Mbps and could not support the new high-resolution live video (which required at least 7 Mbps), causing choppy streams and server crashes; Cambium Networks’ PTP 600 (deployed by service provider Rapid Solutions) was selected to meet the requirement.

Cambium Networks’ PTP 600 Point-to-Point radio was installed between the 30-foot buoy and the Key Largo base, delivering an average throughput of 31.5 Mbps (about 10–15× the prior capacity) and carrier-grade availability (99.999%). The link maintained connectivity through rough seas and Hurricane Jeanne with no packet loss, enabled high-quality live video streaming, improved VoIP, and supported new applications such as ISS video conferencing and NEMO7 mission streams.
