Jamaica Public Service Company Relies on Cambium Networks to Build Smart Grid

Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), the sole electricity distributor in Jamaica serving over 680,000 customers, needed a ubiquitous communications backbone to modernize its grid and tie together geographically dispersed devices—automated switches, AMI meters, smart streetlights, IoT sensors and other intelligent electronic devices. To deliver a scalable, flexible Field Area Network, JPS selected Cambium Networks and its next-generation wireless technology (a point-to-multipoint radio solution operating in the 3300–3900 MHz band).

Cambium Networks deployed a private broadband, point-to-multipoint wireless fabric with repeater sites and access points for IEDs, centrally manageable to cover the island’s roughly 14,000 km of distribution and transmission lines. The Cambium solution provided a more reliable, cost-effective communications layer that enabled JPS’s grid automation and smart-city initiatives—supporting AMI, fault indicators, smart streetlights and other devices—while positioning the utility for future expansion.
