Class 1 Freight Rail Operator Deploys Multi-Gbps 60 GHz cnWave at Major Yard

Class 1 Freight Rail Company faced unreliable Wi‑Fi and congested 5 GHz backhaul across a busy railyard, where fiber was costly and disruptive to deploy. The railroad’s legacy platform delivered only a few megabits of backhaul amid high RF noise from industrial Wi‑Fi, causing outages and limiting operations. Cambium Networks was selected to provide a higher‑capacity, low‑latency wireless alternative using its 60 GHz cnWave mmWave technology.

Cambium Networks deployed 75 cnWave nodes (primarily V5000 distribution nodes with V1000 client nodes) across a facility just over two miles long and 0.25 miles wide, managed centrally with cnMaestro and using electronic beam‑steering for fast alignment. The multi‑Gbps cnWave mesh eliminated 5 GHz interference, raised backhaul from megabits to multi‑gigabit speeds with sub‑millisecond latency, and provided enough Ethernet capacity to support high‑resolution video surveillance and reliable DVR uploads — improving network quality of service and operational visibility across the yard.
