City of Edinburgh Council secures £500,000 for park lighting with Calvium

The City of Edinburgh Council faced the challenge of encouraging active travel by making its parks feel safer after dark. The council commissioned Calvium to conduct place-based research to determine which of its 149 parks were best suited for the installation of new sensitive path lighting, a key part of its active travel action plan.

Calvium systematically assessed the parks across five critical place-based dimensions to create a shortlist and then a ranked table of recommendations. This research provided the key evidence that led to an initial £500,000 investment from the council. The solution is expected to enhance perceived safety, increase active travel, and help the city work towards its net zero by 2030 target.
