A CAESES Case Study
The customer, Largest Automotive Transmission Manufacturer, needed to improve the performance of automotive torque converters—maximizing efficiency and torque ratio at high speeds while minimizing cavitation and ensuring good transmission-fluid flow. CAESES was engaged to provide modeling and simulation-driven design and optimization capabilities, enabling complex geometry definition and automated coupling to external CFD tools.
CAESES implemented a workflow coupling designs to XFlow and ANSYS/CFX for full 360-degree transient and MRF quasi-steady analyses, then parameterized and optimized the stator geometry. The optimization delivered efficiency improvements in excess of 3%; CAESES notes that extending parameterization to turbine and pump blades could yield further performance gains.
