A Cadcorp Case Study
Salford City Council needed a way to find and manage public and private CCTV cameras — their locations, fields of view and who controlled them — to speed up investigations, plan coverage and improve partner working. To solve this, the council commissioned a web-based CCTV mapping system built on a GIS platform provided by Cadcorp, giving password-controlled access to police, fire service, university and other partners.
Cadcorp’s GIS solution integrated Ordnance Survey mapping, aerial photography and local datasets to plot 374 camera locations (including 17 traffic sites), show maximum fields of view, identify owners/monitoring centres and allow partner uploads; roughly 80 users have had one hour of training. Implemented for less than the cost of a single pole-mounted camera, the system is in daily police use, has supported a long‑range rooftop surveillance operation and the apprehension of a nuisance caller, and has saved officers considerable time by streamlining camera discovery and evidence gathering.
