Salford City Council - Customer Case Study

Salford City Council, the local authority in Greater Manchester, faced a fragmented GIS environment with departmental silos (ESRI, MapInfo, GGP and Sirius) and a need to meet e‑government targets while retaining existing systems. To centralize mapping and make spatial data widely accessible, the council selected Cadcorp and its Cadcorp SIS desktop and GeognoSIS web mapping software as the vendor and products to underpin the new corporate GIS and spatial data warehouse.

Cadcorp implemented a central Oracle 10g SDO spatial data warehouse and delivered intranet and internet mapping via Cadcorp SIS and GeognoSIS (services went live in H1 2007), integrating legacy systems and using SIS to load and interrogate data where direct SDO support was lacking. The Cadcorp solution removed silos, allowed council staff, councillors and the public to access filtered map-based information through a browser, sparked a “mushrooming” of requests to include more departmental data, mainstreamed GIS across the organisation and improved decision-making and service delivery without needing extra translation software or middleware.
