London Fire Brigade - Customer Case Study

The London Fire Brigade, which serves 7.4 million residents across Greater London and handles hundreds of thousands of incidents each year, needed a corporate GIS to support risk planning, operational planning and resource management after years of piecemeal, operational-only GIS use. To deliver a desktop and web-based solution that could interoperate with many formats and existing systems, the Brigade selected Cadcorp’s SIS desktop and GeognoSIS.NET web GIS — the web front end becoming the Brigade’s IMapping service.

Cadcorp deployed SIS to key users in late 2005 and rolled out GeognoSIS.NET/I Mapping across the organisation in 2006, providing searchable maps, data filtering, user-drawn graphics and themed/hot‑spot mapping by ward, borough and station. The Cadcorp solution is used to produce COMAH site plans, event resource maps, performance KPI snapshots and risk maps that feed the London Safety Plan; these outputs have helped borough commanders target prevention work and are credited with outcomes such as more focused resource deployment and a reported 20% reduction in hoax calls through hotspot analysis.
