A Cadcorp Case Study
Derbyshire FRS needed a simple, easy-to-use incident support mapping tool that could be operated by retained firefighters with minimal training. The service wanted a system able to produce large, updatable printed maps, display standard map layers, overlay the FireMet grid, support fire-service units of measure (e.g. hose lengths), run spatial queries against a gazetteer, and record incident history — requirements that led them to work with Cadcorp.
Cadcorp delivered a customised version of its Cadcorp Spatial Information System tailored for incident command: a streamlined desktop application with red-lining/editing, gazetteer lookup, spatial queries, FireMet grid overlay, dynamic resource plotting and print-ready map output, plus incident history logging. The Cadcorp solution enabled rapid generation of address lists for at‑risk zones, quick printing and updating of sector maps, easier post-incident debriefing and low training overhead, and was readily adopted by crews in Derbyshire FRS as a practical, routinely used tool.
