A Cadcorp Case Study
Charnwood Borough Council, which serves about 155,000 people, confronted fragmented, proprietary Unix-based GIS systems that were costly to maintain and hard to share across departments or with the public. To establish a corporate, open and web-enabled mapping capability the council chose Cadcorp and its SIS Spatial Information System family — including Cadcorp SIS desktop, ActiveX tools and the GeognoSIS web server — to power a council-wide iMAP service.
Cadcorp implemented a solution centered on GeognoSIS and the SIS product suite, embedding mapping into back‑office workflows and publishing data from Oracle 10g/9i through the public iMAP portal. The outcome: over 200 datasets (including 180,000+ planning polygons) are available to staff and citizens, iMAP web hits rose from 1,764 to 10,674 (a 600% increase in eight months), and land charge searches that previously took 10–12 days now complete in 2–3 days, delivering faster public services and clear efficiency gains.
