A Cadcorp Case Study
Charnwood Borough Council, a large district authority serving over 171,000 residents, faced under‑used geographic information and an ageing bespoke intranet GIS despite 14 years of working with Cadcorp technology (including Cadcorp SIS). The council had no public map-sharing, limited editing access for non‑planning staff, and a reduced GIS team (from five to two) responsible for maintaining data on some 91,000 addressable objects.
Cadcorp implemented off‑the‑shelf web GIS applications — Web Map Editor for internal use (now available to 450 council employees) and Web Map Layers for public access (about 20 map layers and the My Charnwood property search). The Cadcorp solution gave all staff simple editing and viewing access, enabled the Housing team (20 staff managing 6,000 properties) and the call centre (50 operators) to work more efficiently, freed GIS staff for strategic analysis, improved public self‑service and channel shift, and delivered cost savings through fewer field visits and reduced reliance on an internal GIS service bureau.
