Cadcorp drives the MAGIC in Connecticut

UConn Library - MAGIC, the University of Connecticut’s Map & Geographic Information Center and the largest public map collection in New England, needed an easy way to deliver its vast historical and modern geospatial holdings to researchers, students and the public without forcing users to convert data or install plug‑ins. To solve that challenge the library chose Cadcorp and its web‑enabled GIS, GeognoSIS, to provide online access, map comparison tools and simple menu-driven selection of georeferenced maps and datasets.

Cadcorp implemented GeognoSIS with a Web Map Service (WMS) interface (deployed via partner Progeos) so users can view, compare, save and download maps as well as export KML for Google Earth and create Google Mash‑Ups. The move substantially increased access and usage: in the first year the MAGIC online viewer logged over 20,000 visitors, hundreds of thousands of page views and the creation of thousands of maps, while removing format barriers and expanding the reach of MAGIC’s ~180,000 map sheets.
