ABP’s Port of Southampton - Customer Case Study

ABP’s Port of Southampton was struggling with information overload in its Vessel Traffic Services Operations Room: radar, radio, AIS, CCTV and two operational databases (PAVIS and SOPIS) produced lots of data but no consolidated, map-based real-time view to spot conflicts and manage risk. Already a user of Cadcorp desktop GIS, ABP’s Port of Southampton turned to Cadcorp for a web-based GIS solution (building on its SIS/GeognoSIS technology) to geo-reference static charts and live dynamic events and present them together on a single display.

Cadcorp delivered a customised browser-based GeognoSIS web services and web map server implementation within two months, integrating live PAVIS/SOPIS and AIS feeds, providing automatic refreshable dynamic layers with configurable update rates, and rendering ships as scaled, oriented shapes. The Cadcorp system runs 24/7 on a large plasma screen, is easy to use and widely adopted by staff, and has improved situational awareness by giving operators a real-time “big picture” to visualise relationships and mitigate potential conflicts.
