Shared service saves £3.5m for St Edmundsbury Council and Forest Heath District Council

West Suffolk Council worked with Bytes Technology as it needed a lower-cost way to license a mix of existing software across Microsoft, Citrix, VMware, Adobe, Sophos and Veeam while also planning for a new shared services model. The council needed advice on the best licensing approach across current and future needs, taking into account renewal dates, usage, and negotiations with software vendors.

Bytes Technology recommended moving from Microsoft Select Agreements to an Enterprise Subscription Agreement, giving the council flexible, subscription-based licensing with a fixed unit price and the ability to adjust quantities over time. The solution helped consolidate contracts, co-term renewals, support migration to newer technologies such as Windows 7, Lync and Hyper-V, and contributed to £3.5m in savings, improved compliance, and a 400% increase in Microsoft Training Day Vouchers.
