How BuzzFeed used BuzzSumo to find, analyze and monitor trends

BuzzFeed UK wanted to break into the national conversation around the June 2017 snap election and highlight how people access and share news on social media—something traditional media alone couldn’t show. To do that, Tom Phillips and his team created the Social Barometer to track the virality of election-related stories and measure public engagement across social platforms.

Using BuzzSumo’s Most Shared Content tool, the team searched multiple election-related terms, filtered results to a core set of 250 relevant articles, and classified them by party and sentiment, updating searches as new terms emerged. The barometer’s launch and follow-up posts generated strong engagement—3.8k shares for the first post and 6,725 shares and 40 backlinks across the series by June 26—and earned mentions in other outlets, including the London School of Economics, helping BuzzFeed secure a place in the national debate.
